Support for flood recovery

If you have been affected by the floods and would like support to complete an application for our hardship fund, or to find out what other help is available to you during this difficult time, we will be visiting:

  • Afon Duad Inn, Cwmduad, Tuesday, October 23, from 2.30pm.

Furniture appeal update

A furniture appeal to help those affected by the recent flooding is now accepting electrical items.
Alongside items such as armchairs, dining tables and chairs, rugs, sofas, bookshelves etc, the appeal run by Carmarthenshire County Council and Xcel Furniture – a non-profit furniture recycling centre – is also accepting white goods which are in good condition and working order.
The items will all be PAT tested, organised by Carmarthenshire County Council.
Residents who would like to donate any unwanted furniture to those families and communities in the county who need temporary furniture are kindly asked to take them to Xcel Furniture in Johnstown, Carmarthen.
Items can be dropped off at the show room during opening hours (Monday-Friday 9am-4.30pm; Saturday 10am-2pm).
Limited collections can be arranged for those who wish to donate but cannot deliver their furniture. Please contact Xcel Furniture to arrange.

Practical and financial help for homes and businesses

Around 230 homes and businesses are now known to have been affected by the floods that hit Carmarthenshire over the weekend.

Teams from Carmarthenshire County Council have been visiting and supporting the hardest hit areas this week, offering practical and financial support to help people get back on their feet.

Bus services update

  • A shuttle service will be running from Cwmduad up to Tycoch to catch the 460 at 7:25am, 9:35am and 10:55am.
    Return journeys will be 14:25 and 16:45.
    This service will start on Monday (October 22) until the road re-opens.
  • The 460 route will operate on a diversion due to road closure near Cwmduad on the A484 until the road is re-opened.

 

Newcastle Emlyn Waste Amnesty

Waste Amnesty – CANCELLED until further notice.

Staff are assisting with the clean-up operation in various communities across the County after flooding caused by Storm Callum.

Support for flood recovery

Carmarthenshire County Council is visiting communities affected by the floods to help people apply for financial help from the hardship fund that has been established for residents and businesses, and to offer any other form of support that is needed.  Officers will be visiting the following areas in the next few days:

  • Friday 19 October
    Pont-Tyweli – Will Mains WCS Yard (Next to Jewson) - from 10am
  • Monday 22 October
    Pontargothi - Pontargothi Hall – from 10am

Flooding furniture appeal

An appeal has been launched by Carmarthenshire County Council and Xcel Furniture – a non-profit furniture recycling centre - to help those who have been affected by the recent flooding.

Residents who would like to donate any unwanted furniture to those families and communities in the county who need temporary furniture are kindly asked to take them to Xcel Furniture in Johnstown, Carmarthen.

Items needed include: Rugs, sofas, armchairs, dining tables and chairs, bookshelves etc.
Items can be dropped off at the show room during opening hours (Monday-Friday 9am-4.30pm; Saturday 10am-2pm). Xcel furniture are unable to collect items as all their vehicles are out delivering to those affected by the flooding.

Cwmduad

Motorists are being reminded that the A484 remains closed at Cwmduad whilst investigations take place following a landslide. No vehicles or persons are permitted to go beyond the highway signs.

Please follow the yellow diversion signs that are in place, using the alternative route B4333 Carmarthen – Newcastle Emlyn.

Pontynyswen bridge

Pontynyswen bridge has been inspected by our structural engineer and has now reopened to traffic.

Public Transport:
Service 460 will operate tomorrow but the timetable will suffer from delays due to a diversion of the usual route.

Service 612 will operate tomorrow but will divert via Henllan at Aberbanc.

C20 - Cwmduad pupils – new pick up time 7:45 (travel via Ty Coch diversion)
Esgair pupils – pick up time 8:07 will remain same but travel on feeder service

All college transport services will operate as normal tomorrow (Tuesday).

Statement: Recovery

A huge clean-up operation is underway to deal with the aftermath of the worst flooding Carmarthenshire has seen in decades.

Carmarthenshire County Council Chief Executive Mark James said: “Our staff have been working hard to respond in extremely difficult conditions. Now that the flood waters have subsided we have shifted our focus from response to recovery and we are doing all we can to support everyone affected. A full assessment of the damage is underway, and, as well as working with partner agencies, we are also speaking with Welsh Government to ensure appropriate resources are in place.”

There may be some further disruption on the network today with further public transport routes likely to be affected.  Some taxi routes in the Towy Valley area may be affected and parents are advised to check with the operator early this morning.

Traffic disruption tomorrow

There will be road/bridge closures in place that are likely to cause significant traffic disruption tomorrow

  • A484 Cenarth Bridge - closed
  • A475 Newcastle Emlyn Bridge - closed
  • A484 Cwmduad to Cynwyl Elfed

If you need to travel between Carmarthen and Newcastle Emlyn, the A484 is closed at Cwmduad due to a landslide. The alternative route is to follow the A484 (Carmarthen to Cynwyl Elfed) and then follow the B4333 (Cynwyl Elfed to Newcastle Emlyn).

  • If you are travelling between Carmarthen and Ceredigion please use the A485 and A486
  • Pensarn Road will be closed tomorrow morning, please use an alternative route

Please allow extra time for your journeys and take extra care on the roads. The alternative routes are likely to be busy, please plan ahead.

Day centres

All our day centres will be open as normal tomorrow.

Refuse collections tomorrow

Refuse collections will take place as normal tomorrow although there may be some delays so please bear with us. If your refuse has not been collected by 4pm, please report a missed collection to us

Abergwili

The flood gates at Abergwili have now been opened and crews have been out sweeping the surface debris. The pump from Abergwili will now be moved to Pensarn to work on reducing water levels in the area.

STORM CALLUM: Advice to the Public

There are major travel disruptions on the A484 between Carmarthen and Cardigan as a result of yesterday’s flooding with a number of bridges currently closed.

Work is ongoing with partners to put diversions in place but delays are highly likely. HGVs will be the worst affected and drivers are advised to plan ahead and only use suitable alternative routes.

Where road closures are in place it is for everyone’s safety – never ignore them and don’t risk driving through flood water.

There is significant flooding around Llandovery, Llandeilo and Capel Dewi; also around the Carmarthen Quay area and Pensarn. Please avoid these areas.

There are still flood warnings on most rivers, please check Natural Resources Wales for updates every 15 minutes. If you are concerned about flooding call the Floodline on 0345 988 1188.

We have responded to a number of calls overnight to fallen trees, blocked highways and minor flooding. Lots of surface water present on most roads, please take extra care

  • The Quay Carmarthen, due to rising levels of the River Towy

Carmarthen Quayside - flood warning

Flood warnings have been issued to businesses at Carmarthen Quayside. The river is expected to overtop the quayside wall overnight, peaking at around 7am Saturday. A road closure will be in place along The Quay from 6pm this evening. Please stay away until conditions improve

St Clears public car park - flood warning

Flooding is likely at the St Clears public car park overnight. River levels are expected to peak at around 7am Saturday morning affecting a large area of the car park. Please take extra care.
