Carmarthenshire Council is calling on county residents and businesses to help raise awareness of the UK Government’s EU Settlement Scheme.

The scheme means EU citizens and their families will have to apply online to secure their rights to live and work in the UK after June 30, 2021.

Free applications can now be made on the on the UK Government website in all 26 EU languages.

If the UK leaves the EU without a Brexit deal, the deadline for applying will be December 31, 2020. If the UK leaves with a deal, the application deadline will be June 30, 2021.

The UK Government website includes information on the overall scheme, who should apply, when people should apply, and what people will need to apply.

Cllr Emlyn Dole, Carmarthenshire County Council Leader, said: “We value the contribution made by Carmarthenshire’s EU citizens and their families to the county’s economy and cultural diversity.

“This is why we’d encourage our EU citizens and their families to apply to this UK Government scheme as soon as possible to secure their rights to continue working and living here.

“We’ve already started raising awareness of this scheme among our staff. A ‘Brexit Guidance’ section of the council website is also now live, which includes information on the EU Settlement Scheme and links to the UK Government website.

“We would encourage people throughout Carmarthenshire to help us raise awareness of this UK Government scheme by mentioning it to any EU citizens living or working in the county who they may know.

“Computers with internet access are available in libraries across the county for EU citizens unable to get online at home.”

Other Brexit preparations at the council include a review of all services to ensure contingencies are put in place to minimise the potential for Brexit-related disruption, if needed.

The council is also contacting county businesses to signpost them to sources of information and advice.

A dedicated council member and officer Brexit working group has been set up, and the council regularly attends a Dyfed Powys Local Resilience Forum Brexit group made up of the police and other agencies.
