Council staff take on frontline roles

Many staff at Carmarthenshire County Council have stepped forward to help frontline services in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Officers from planning, enforcement, catering, libraries, leisure centres, museums and theatres are just some of the workers that have moved across to provide additional support to essential services.

Training has been completed in many areas with staff undertaking roles such as cleaners, community carers, food delivery drivers, child care hub support staff and also assisting the homeless team.

Economic Development officers have also been redeployed to customer services to support businesses over the phone and process enquiries, and to run food banks in communities.

Refuse and recycling collection training is also underway for staff from other teams, should the demand on the frontline service increase.

Carmarthenshire Council’s Executive Board member for Human Resources, Cllr Mair Stephens said: “During the last few weeks many staff, unable to undertake their normal duties, have pulled out all the stops to ensure we continue to deliver our essential services to our communities during the Coronavirus outbreak.  I’m truly overwhelmed by the number that have moved across to these services and taken on roles that are, in many cases, unfamiliar territory for them. We continue to face unprecedented and challenging times as the transmission of COVID-19 furthers into our communities, so I’d sincerely like to thank every one of them for stepping up as a key worker. I also want to reassure the community that we are doing all we can to protect frontline services during this extremely difficult and uncertain time.”

The council is urgently appealing for more staff as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

It is looking to recruit people into a number of jobs throughout Carmarthenshire to help keep frontline services running, but particularly need carers, cleaners and catering staff.

No previous experience is needed, as full training will be provided.

The council offers good rates of pay and flexible hours. Full and part-time, permanent and temporary contracts are available.
